The Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers throughout Australia solemnly marked the Assembly of St. John the Baptist – Jovandan, on Wednesday, January 20.
It is celebrated the day after the Epiphany, as a remembrance of the Baptism of Jesus and the role of the saint, who prepared the people for the new faith.
It is estimated that Saint John is on the third place among Serbs in terms of the number of those who celebrate him, and that could be seen in terms of the number of cut celebration cakes.
True, this year, due to the crown, restrictions and the working day, the number of celebrants was slightly lower than before, but the priests also visited those who celebrated in their homes.
The liturgy in the church of the Holy Prince Lazar in the Sydney suburb of Alexandria was led by Archbishop Andrej Krstić, co-served by Rev. Nikola Bilić and Ljupčo Dvojakovski (from the Russian Church Abroad), the choir was led by the church’s elder Proto Miodrag Perić, and the church choir was in charge.
Before and after the liturgy, 35 cakes were cut for the celebrants, an act performed by the priests Miodrag and Andrej. Saint John is also celebrated as a baptismal feast by Father Andrej, who received a handful of congratulations on that occasion.
The management of Sydney’s Lazarica deserves a compliment for taking care to respect the anti-kovid rules, as well as the hard-working members of the local Circle of Serbian Sisters at the prepared lunch.
In one of the next issues of “Vesti”, we bring information about the upcoming beginning of the new school year, as well as the enrollment of students in the Lazarica school.
