The mayor of Tondela asked for the suspension of the mandate, from January 15, for 180 days, after being sentenced to suspended prison and loss of mandate, although the sentence has not yet become final.
“In recent weeks, I have been subjected, in absolute disregard for the principle of the presumption of innocence, to conditions and pressure, which I cannot accept”, says the Mayor of Tondela, José António Jesus, in a statement sent today to the agency Portuguese
José António Jesus was sentenced on November 26 of this year, by the Court of Viseu, to five years in prison, with suspended execution, and loss of mandate.
The mayor, re-elected in September this year by the PSD for the third consecutive term, was convicted of a crime of embezzlement and two of document forgery.
The court gave as proven that he appropriated public money by receiving undue payments for traveling in his own vehicles, when in fact he traveled in municipal vehicles.
The presiding judge of the collective, Conceição Oliveira, explained that the loss of mandate will only become definitive after the final decision.
José António Jesus was also subject to the additional penalty of banning the exercise of public service for a period of four years.
“I will never fail to defend convictions and values of dignity and honorability,” writes the mayor of that municipality in the district of Viseu in the statement released today.
In terms of political and party nature, “there has been a change in the conditions inherent in the position of some people, given the values of cohesion and commitments assumed before”, says the mayor, justifying his decision.
“These attitudes have seriously distorted, at this moment, the space for the full exercise of the mandate for which I was legitimately and democratically elected”, he stresses.
“The implication of the aforementioned political conditions, which I consider critical, are the reason on which I base and request the suspension of my mandate, for a period of 180 days, in accordance with paragraph 2 of article 77 of Law no. .º 169/99, of September 18, the requested suspension may be interrupted, also under the legal terms”, it explains.
The suspension “will take effect from January 15th” and the mayor assures “the possible availability – in the best interest of the council – to cooperate with the team that remains in operation”.
Over three pages, the mayor says he believes he has made his “contribution to the service of the council” and, in that sense, assures that he gave “the best he knew and could”, recognizing, however, that “some things could have been better “.
In the document, the mayor of Tondela sets out the work carried out since 2013, highlighting in particular the “growth of the municipality of Tondela”, in various sectors, and the projects he leaves for the future of the municipality.
Addressing “a word” to the citizens, José António Jesus assures that he will be “always with each one” of them, “in the certainty that the values of work and honesty are reflected in each decision taken in the exercise of my mandates”.
“Always count on me and, therefore, I’ll tell you until now!”, he concludes.
