Joint Committee on the Unified Code of Conduct for the Garment Industry

Performing multiple audits in business organizations is not only a waste of time and money for the organizations, but also complicates the audit process and makes compliance difficult for the organizations. Due to this, the call for consolidating protocols for auditing in garment factories is getting stronger day by day. In such a context, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) have formed a committee to work on formulating a Unified Code of Conduct for the garment industry.

Leaders of BGMEA and BKMEA discussed a Unified Code of Conduct for the garment industry and formed a joint committee at the BGMEA PR office in Gulshan on Sunday (April 9th). BGMEA President Shahidullah Azim, BGMEA Vice President Miran Ali, Director Asif Ashraf and BKMEA Executive President Mohammad Hatem, Vice President Fazle Shamim Ehsan, Vice President Md. Akhtar Hossain Apurba and director Imran Quader Turya.

The 11-member committee, headed by BGMEA vice-president Miran Ali, will thoroughly evaluate the feasibility of a general code of conduct for social audit, including local laws, rules and policies, and the Code of Conduct for Buyers, including ULGP, and third party audit protocols. The committee will consider the local context and work with the highest consideration of local and international policies.

The committee will engage with international stakeholders, including brands, trade organizations, academia and social partners, to find a possible way to formulate a unified code of conduct.
