Swimming for the honorable Epiphany Cross, organized by the Serbian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity from Brunswick in Melbourne, has become traditional.
This year, as in the previous six years, children and adult swimmers gathered in Port Melbourne to swim for the honorary cross.
And while in the homeland, the best swimmers compete against the weather, the swimmers in Melbourne were served by the weather. As it is summer in the southern hemisphere, the air temperature was 25 degrees and the water around 19 degrees.
After short introductory words and prayers by Uncle Petar Damjanović and Milorad Lončar, first the children jumped into the water to reach the cross, and this year the fastest was nine-year-old Joakim Stanojković, a student of the Serbian Ethnic School “Vuk Stefanović Karadžić” – Kizboro.
– Let all the children come next year and win if they want – Joakim said shyly, after the victory.
This year’s winner was Ivan Cukanic, who in previous years helped organize the race for the honorary cross, driving a boat.
– This year I did not ride a boat and it seems that God and the wind helped me to win this year and be the first to swim to the honorary cross – Ivan cheerfully thanked everyone who participated in the race.
