Director Jean-Luc Godard, one of the founders and significant representatives of the French New Wave in film, died at the age of 91, French media reported.

Godard introduced himself with the film of the sixties, “To the last breath”.

It was his first feature-length work and one of the earliest, most influential films of the New Wave, which changed the rules of film art, continuing to change them with the productions “Contempt”, “Group of Outsiders” and “Alphaville”.

His work brought verve and boldness to film, and he had a great influence on many directors, from Quentin Tarantino to Martin Scorsese.

Before standing behind the camera, Godard worked as a film critic.

The movie stars, Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo, who played in his films were glamorous in a new, more casual way.

The camera was constantly moving, the editing was fast and bold, and the script was semi-improvised.

“It was a film that had everything we’d seen before on the big screen – girls, gangsters, cars – it exploded and put an end to the old style once and for all,” Godard once said.

Then followed the film “Little Soldier”, which was banned until 1963 due to the depiction of torture.

Actress Ana Karina, who starred in a number of Godard’s most successful films, married him in 1961.

Karina played a dancer in a night club who wants a baby in the film “A Woman is a Woman” from 1961, a year later she had a role in the film “Live Your Life”, and in 1965 she starred in “Group of Outsiders”.
