The State Nature Protection of the Slovak Republic does not recommend, at present, especially for hardy people, swimming in Veľký Draždiak in Petržalka, Bratislava. The reason is the repeated death of swans on this lake, recently bird flu was also diagnosed here. Dog owners or poultry breeders should also draw attention.
“Dead birds cannot be manipulated under any circumstances. Swimming in lakes where avian influenza has been confirmed in birds is not recommended. The bird flu virus can also infect mammals, “Petržalka spokeswoman Mária Halašková told TASR.
Dog owners should therefore make sure that dogs do not come into contact with dead birds while walking, or drink water from a contaminated lake. Poultry farmers should also be advised to avoid contact of waterfowl with their poultry.
Competence in this case falls under the State Veterinary and Food Administration of the Slovak Republic, which must be contacted in the event that residents come across dead birds. You can also call the telephone number 112, where they will provide contact information for the emergency mobile phone of the State Nature Protection of the Slovak Republic. Residents can also turn to the environmental department of the city district, which will move the complaint further to the competent ones.
The Regional Veterinary and Food Administration (RVPS) also points out that, in the event of an outbreak of avian influenza, it is most important to prevent direct and indirect contact of farmed poultry or other farmed birds with wild birds by all possible means. “Also, the water used to feed farmed birds must not come from surface water reservoirs accessible to wild birds,” Miloš Mašlej, director of RVPS Bratislava – mesto, told TASR.
According to him, RVPS continues to monitor the occurrence of bird flu and takes samples for laboratory examination. “In case of finding a dead bird, it is necessary to report this to the RVPS, which, depending on the dead bird, will decide on the sampling or the method of harmless removal of the carcass,” added Mašlej.
