However, rodents in particular can do a lot of damage and even by biting the cables, they can even make the vehicle completely inoperable. However, not all damage caused by an animal in the engine compartment is automatically covered by an accident insurance.
Under the hood
The animals enter the engine compartment, which stays warm for a long time even after the vehicle is switched off, giving them refuge from bad weather or winter. If an unsuspecting driver starts the car and, for example, the cat does not have time to run, it gets between the timing belts of the engine, which often ends tragically for the animal and damages the car.
According to animal rights activists, such a situation can be prevented by pounding more fist on the hood of the vehicle before getting into the car. The animal runs out of the engine compartment. Drivers should learn this rule especially on cold days.
Damage to the engine as a result of such a situation cannot be regarded as damage caused by rodents covered by accident insurance.
“Such cases are not automatically covered by accident insurance and we assess them on a case-by-case basis.” stated Jiří Moravec from the motor vehicle claims settlement department of the Uniqa insurance company.
Damage in thousands of euros
He continued that this category also includes cases where birds were found under the hood, or the damage was caused by torsos of birds or small rodents that other animals brought there as prey. Therefore, if the driver has a problem starting the car in cold weather, it may not always be just a malfunction.
The experience of many drivers shows that rodents like to “enjoy” the insulation of cables or hoses, and such damage can completely disable the car.
“Nowadays, cars are driven mostly electronically and therefore the failure of the respective cable can cause a fatal failure of the electronic systems on the vehicle and shut it down for a very long time,” stated Moravec. The damage left by rodents is sometimes in the thousands of euros. They can damage the wiring cables, ignition, as well as damage the inner cover of the hood.
