JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel has signed a contract with the United States for the acquisition of 12 CH-53K helicopters from Lockheed Martin and two KC-46 tankers from Boeing, Israel’s Defense Ministry said on Friday.
According to the estimates provided by the ministry, the total amount of the contract would be established around 3.1 billion dollars (approximately 2.7 billion euros).
According to Brigadier General Shimon Tsentsiper, head of equipment in the Israeli Air Force who spoke on the IDF radio microphone, the tankers will not be delivered until 2025, while the first helicopters are expected to arrive in 2026.
Shimon Tsentsiper said Israel wanted to speed up the delivery of tankers and expected to have four eventually.
According to the Israeli press, the acquisition of these tankers could be essential to carry out an airstrike against Iranian nuclear installations, a threat wielded by Israel for a long time.
Shimon Tsentsiper said for his part that the current air force refueling capabilities were sufficient to enable them to carry out their missions.
