Isola: We will test two important innovations in Imola

Pirelli tires have prepared three softer compounds for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix: Hard will be used C3, Medium – C4, Soft – C5.

The stage in Imola will be the second stage of the season after Baku, where these lineups will be used, which can create conditions for the teams to use a variety of tactical schemes. The surface on this track is quite smooth, the abrasiveness of the asphalt surface in Pirelli is assessed as average.

Mario IsolaHead of Motorsport Programs at Pirelli: “In the first phase of the European phase of the season this year, two important tire innovations will be introduced, both of which are based on sustainability.

The first is related to qualifications: in Imola we will try out a new provision of the regulations, which prescribes the use of slicks of different compositions in all three sessions: in the first part of the qualification it will be Hard, in the second – Medium, in the third – Soft.

This means that each rider will be given a smaller number of kits for the weekend – not 13, but 11. This will reduce the environmental impact that occurs during the production and transportation of tires.

For the same reason, starting from the Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna, the teams will have at their disposal tires for heavy rain, which do not require preheating in thermal covers. Tests conducted on the tracks showed that even without such warming up, this rubber works more efficiently than the previous version of such tires.

This is the first real step towards phasing out the use of thermal covers in the future, and it became possible after a series of studies carried out by Pirelli specialists.

As a final note, we have chosen softer compound tires (C3, C4, and C5) for Imola, which will allow teams to choose from a wider range of tactical formations.”
