On stage, they are world-famous, extravagant showmen who have shaped generations and created the soundtracks to our lives. Off the stage they are often destructive, angry, sometimes violent, insecure men with highly complex résumés who often take refuge in drug and alcohol abuse.

The stories behind the music icons

So what makes a great frontman, what differentiates him from an average singer? The documentary series “Frontmen” approaches these extraordinary individuals by means of meticulous archive research, exclusively produced interview material and stylized dramatic reconstructions. Characters, often from small towns and suburbs, who have chosen to dominate the world – outrageous, disturbing, entertaining and inspiring. These are the stories of the greatest rock stars of all time.

Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Van Halen and Alice Cooper. These bands and musicians are well known to rock and metal fans around the world. With their music, they not only thrilled an audience of millions, but also inspired generations of musicians. The documentary sheds light on the musical and personal development of their frontmen as well as their escapades on and off stage. Old companions talk about the musical geniuses and their development into legends of rock music.

About the documentary series “Frontmen”

The first four 90-minute episodes of the rock documentary series “Frontmen” will be available from June 1st in the ARD media library. The first season dedicates one episode each to Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), David Lee Roth (Van Halen) and Alice Cooper. Four more episodes about Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), Axl Rose (Guns ‘n’Roses), Jon Bon Jovi and Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley (Kiss) will be released in August this year.
