Ireland: Universal Income for Artists

In Ireland, as part of the government’s economic recovery plan, a pilot project will be tested to guarantee a universal basic income for artists.

Arts Minister Catherine Martin announced Tuesday that she has secured the government’s commitment to prioritize the program. A proposal for the pilot project will be developed by July in collaboration with Minister Heather Humphreys of the Department of Social Protection.

“This was the number one recommendation from artists and the industry through the Arts and Culture Recovery Taskforce Report – Life Worth Living”, he has declared.

This is an unprecedented move and the pilot project will involve a significant number of artists.

“We recognize that courageous steps are needed for our priceless and valuable artistic community to come back stronger than ever.”

The payment is aimed at helping bands, musicians, suppliers and music companies, and is expected to be 327 euros per week, starting January 2022.

After five years of research, the National Campaign for the Arts is pleased that the pilot project has finally come to fruition. “It has the potential to be a historic milestone for the arts in Ireland, a reflection of a nation that truly and authentically understands and supports the artistic process. A basic income for the arts sector recognizes the need to remove precariousness from the lives of artists and artistic workers of all disciplines, so that they can develop, create and present their best work for the benefit of all of society.
