Iraqi Health Minister resigns after fire that killed 82 people in a hospital
Iraqi Health Minister Hassan-al Tamimi resigned on Tuesday. At stake is a fire in a hospital dedicated to the covid-19 that killed 82 people and wounded 110 about 10 days ago.
An official report points out political responsibilities for the fire. According to a statement, the director of the hospital, his administrative assistant and the head of security at the establishment, as well as the head of the health sector in eastern Baghdad “have been dismissed and will undergo various disciplinary measures”.
The minister had been suspended the day after the fire, on April 25.
According to AFP, the fire occurred after the explosion of oxygen bottles “stored without respect for safety conditions” in the hospital. Many victims were linked to ventilators when the oxygen tanks exploded.
