A 60-year-old man from Iran has been indicted by the court in Stockholm for carrying out mass executions of prisoners in 1988 in a prison near Tehran.
The crimes must have taken place during the bloody war between Iran and Iraq. The 60-year-old Hamid Nouri was arrested when he landed at Arlanda airports in November 2019 to visit the Swedish capital.
According to the human rights organization Amnesty International, it was in the summer of 1988 that a large number of men and women were driven by forklifts to construction cranes, where they were hoisted up and hung. It also happened from lampposts. Some were executed by firing squad.
Iraj Mesdaghi has been working for a quarter of a century to document the crime he witnessed in 1988. It was at a time when he himself was a political prisoner in Iran. He fled to Sweden, where he lives today.
Har will be one of the prosecution’s main witnesses at the upcoming trial, and the same applies to almost 50 people who are located around the world.
“This indictment is so incredibly important to all of us. “For all mothers, all fathers, families and others close to people who fell victim to the Iranian regime,” he said.
The decision to kill prisoners came in a religious Fatwa from the then spiritual leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini.
According to the Swedish indictment, the prisoners were subjected to “great suffering, which the prosecutors consider to be torture and inhuman treatment”.
It was Iranians from the group calling themselves the Mujahedin of the People who were the target of the executions. They were considered by the regime to be unreliable because they cultivated relations with the war opponent Iraq.
