iPhone 14 is a trap. Apple is making the switch to Android more and more difficult

For now, only the US has serious complications, but for now.

Apple has long been concerned that a customer who buys an iPhone would have a difficult time escaping to the competition in the future. A tightly closed ecosystem of services, accessories and applications is consistently built in such a way that each new user lands in an invisible cage.

The iPhone 14 adds another stumbling block to users who would dare to look at the competition’s phone in the future.

iPhone 14: Apple puts everything on one card. Or rather, the lack of it

The American version of the iPhone 14 – and fortunately only this one – does not have a physical SIM card slot. A US resident who buys the latest smartphone is doomed to the eSIM standard.

The lack of a SIM card slot in the iPhone 14 means that it is difficult to switch to Android

Thanks to the eSIM standard, activation of operator services does not require placing in the phone. The process of transferring a number from one iPhone to another is therefore reduced to a few clicks. Exactly – from iPhone to iPhone.

Julian Chokkattu from The Wired has already had the opportunity to check the iPhone 14 from the American distribution. As part of the tests, he decided to transfer the tariff plan from an Apple smartphone to Google’s Pisel 6 Pro. It turned out that it would require contact with the operator, so the journalist gave up. “How can that be easier than inserting and removing a physical SIM?” – she asks Chokkattu in his review.

How many users do you think – who will catch the eye of the Galaxy S24 in 2 years – will wave their hands in a similar way to avoid unnecessary complications? I bet a lot. Apple, rather, too, otherwise it probably would not have decided to make such a move.

It must be honestly noted that Apple is not to blame for the difficult migration, but has consciously used it

Apple, of course, has no influence on the eSIM activation methods of individual operators. For example, in our backyard, Orange allows you to complete the entire process with a few clicks in the application, but in T-Mobile, activation of the chip must be preceded by a visit to the salon or a phone call.

Apple is also not to blame for the fact that the overwhelming majority of smartphones from other brands do not have an eSIM chip. The standard has been developed for several years, so those willing had time to join the event.

Apple also has no obligation to communicate with Google so that transferring the number between different systems is as simple and hassle-free as possible.

Apple – as a manufacturer of smartphones – is, however, aware of the market situation and the mechanisms in force. The company consciously used them to its advantage to throw one more stumbling block under the feet of those who will be considering switching to a different brand phone in the future.

That in itself wouldn’t be that bad. The problem is that this time the enclosure of the invisible cage is to the detriment of even the most faithful iPhone users.

After all, the lack of a SIM card slot means unnecessary complications

According Apple’s own data, the eSIM standard is now supported by local operators from 84 countries around the world. It is not even half of all countries.

When an American wants to take his iPhone 14 to a country outside the list, he will not be able to conveniently purchase a data package from a local operator. He will also not be able to buy a SIM card in the kiosk and put it in the phone, because Apple has removed the slot.

Sure, there are global eSIM operators that deliver their services to over 190 countries around the world. However, their prices are often high compared to the offers of local chains. Not to mention roaming, the costs of which can be astronomical in some regions.

On top of that, there is another problem. Even if an operator supports eSIM, not necessarily all offers. Apple simply deliberately drastically narrowed down the pool of telecommunications offers for its own customers to choose from.

Does eSIM have a lot of advantages? Absolutely. But the lack of a slot for a physical SIM card is virtually nonexistent. Because we probably agree that the elimination of one gap from the edge of the housing is not an asset that changes the rules of the game.

The only advantage of the whole situation is that Appla’s move can motivate the entire industry to intensify work on the eSIM standard. Actually, Tim Cook turned his own clients into volunteers who would involuntarily take care of its popularization.
