iOS tip: Sort apps quickly on the home screen

If you download a lot of apps, the home screen of your iPhone or iPad can quickly become full and confusing. You can sort apps into folders, but moving each app individually can quickly become tedious.

But there is also an easier way, because since iOS 11 Apple has integrated a way to move several apps at the same time. Unfortunately, the option isn’t all that obvious, so it’s easy to miss it. We explain how you can quickly rearrange the apps on the home screen.

iOS: Move multiple apps at the same time

  • First press and hold a free area on the home screen to activate the edit mode (jiggle mode).
  • Drag the first app to an empty space on the screen.
  • Without letting go of the first app, tap the rest of the apps that you want to move.
  • Drag the app stack to the desired location (e.g. into a folder or on a new page of the home screen) and let go.

The apps are arranged in the new location in the same order in which you tapped them. The first app comes first, the last app tapped comes last.

iOS 14: Save apps in the app library

With iOS 14, Apple has also introduced another way to keep the home screen clear. All apps are now collected in the app library and automatically grouped into thematic folders. This means that they do not necessarily have to be displayed on the home screen as well.

Under Settings / Home screen you can specify whether newly installed apps should only be added to the app library or also to the home screen.

You can then give the tidy home screen, freed from unnecessary apps, new functions with the widgets also introduced in iOS 14. We explain how to add widgets in a separate article.
