Investment of 26 million US dollars in import and export of agricultural products

Staff Reporter: The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing ৭ 26 million to increase exports and facilitate imports of agricultural and agro-processed products through infrastructure development. Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi inaugurated the USDA-funded Bangladesh Trade Facilitation Project at a hotel in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The project will be implemented till September 30, 2025. Earl R. Miller, US Ambassador to Dhaka was present at the occasion. Emphasis will be given to create one cold chain each at Chittagong Sea Port and Shahjalal International Airport through Bangladesh Trade Facilitation Project.

Exports of all types of agricultural products, whether perishable or non-perishable, can be kept in cold storage quickly if there is any delay or problem. In addition, to facilitate the import-export process, automation, online certification, strengthening of risk-based product exemption process, rules and regulations of import-export process, creation of database on import-export and products of different countries and commercialization of country’s products will be given importance.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said the project would play an important role in ensuring the position of Bangladeshi products in international trade. The project will work on legal and infrastructural reforms of trade system to facilitate marketing of agricultural products and agro-processing products, development of testing system to ensure product quality, structural changes in risk-based product unloading.

Miller, the US ambassador to Dhaka, said the US government would continue to support the Bangladesh government’s efforts to create a business-friendly trade environment and reform the infrastructure needed to ensure the international quality of Bangladeshi products.

Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Tapan Kanti Ghosh in his speech said that the implementation of the Trade Facilitation Agreement requires technical and technical assistance from the development partners. Where the USDA has come forward to provide technical assistance in expanding agribusiness. The activities of the project will be coordinated by the Ministry of Commerce.

A presentation on the activities of the project said that several agencies including Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), Bangladesh Safe Food Authority (BFSA), Bangladesh Customs, Department of Agricultural Extension will work on the project.
