Interview Check Point: The brutal world of cyber-attacks is moving beyond IT

Introduction

The problem of cyber-attacks only seems to be getting worse, according to figures from Check Point Research. The number of ransomware attacks worldwide rose by no less than 59 percent in the past quarter. In the Netherlands and Belgium, the total number of ransomware attacks and other cyber attacks (including, for example, DDOs, infostealer– and espionage attacks) also never so high. In Belgium, the increase was equal to the worldwide percentage, namely 32 percent. In the Netherlands, 40 percent more cyber attacks were carried out than in the same quarter last year.

It may surprise you, but the underlying problem of cyber attacks, hacks and ransomware attacks is increasingly moving outside of IT, explains Peter Sandkuijl. The VP of sales engineering at Check Point Software Technologies recognizes some dangerous trends in the brutal world of cybersecurity: the impact wars have on hackers, the rise of wiper-attacks and the new targets of attackers, namely smartphones and people who work from home.
