The Salone del Mobile 2021
The 2021 edition of the Furniture expo, that of the post-pandemic restart from Covid-19, long awaited after the cancellation of 2020.
Strongly desired by the institutions to give a clear signal of restarting our country through a sector that is among the excellence of Made in Italy in the world, the furniture fair was personally inaugurated by President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella.
The Supersalone, as this 60th edition was called, presented itself with a very particular format, undoubtedly different, alternative.
Open to the public from day one and no longer just for insiders, it was designed more for a heterogeneous audience and for operators in the sector, with the aim of presenting and representing design through the many brands that participated.
The major Asian buyers were not seen but there were still many visitors, including foreigners, and although far from the numbers of the previous editions, the turnout was constant and considerable, given the period.
The new format of the Salone
It was a decidedly format concentrated and reduced compared to the usual size because there were only four exhibition pavilions.

In the previous editions the stands of the furniture fair had a volumetric development and reproduced the settings of the various spaces of the house, creating a three-dimensional, immersive and engaging vision for the visitor.

In this edition have been replaced by linear stands from very small dimensions that recreate their main focus on exhibition wall, a real showcase made up of recycled wood panels on which to hang or place the design pieces.

This made it possible to make the routes more fluid and faster, placing the accent on the single piece of furniture or object and highlighting the brand.

The visitor found himself in front of an image, a snapshot, because the stand was designed two-dimensionally to offer him aexperience of use, especially visual. The audience stands still in front of observing or taking pictures.
More performing exhibition spaces at the Salone del Mobile 2021
With a format of this type there is a lot less enticed to approach to wander among the furnishings and try the comfort of a chair or sofa or touch a woven fabric with your hand. Or again, open a door of a piece of furniture and there are few, but among the most crowded, the stands that involve in this sense.
Although the space available is contained in depth, NATUZZI it still succeeds, in full line with his philosophy aziendale, to create a welcoming setting that invites the visitor to approach and stop comfortably, to discover up close the new collection 2021/2022, all inspired by lifestyle mediterraneo.

Overall we can say that the stands that exhibited a few pieces, the most representative of their brand, were successful, focusing attention on message to be transmitted through its own set-up to communicate the company’s philosophy in a clear and unambiguous way.

The exhibition space of Saba Italia Srl it is striking precisely for its clear communication which represents the essence of the brand very well.
Staged in the space available only his new Gala model, signed by the designer Cristina Celestino, which stands out for its pastel shades and for her own sculptural elegance.
The originality of the Molteni & C setting at the Supersalone
On the other hand, the stands that tried to exhibit as many pieces as possible in the little space available were less effective, giving the idea of supermarket design.
Some exhibition spaces, on the contrary, have appeared excessively minimal, perhaps a little too bare, it was difficult to understand the type of product treated if you did not already know the brand beforehand.
Very funny, on the other hand, the interpretation of the new format by Molteni & C, clean yes Ron Gilad, which stages in its exhibition space the cabin of an airplane complete with a porthole and a view from the window, where the armchairs are the seats model Round D.154.5, designed by Gio ‘Ponti in 1954 and reissued in a more contemporary version.

a tribute to the great master of design and a creative and effective interpretation of what was the history of this truly avant-garde chair for the era in which it was designed and still today incredibly current.
In 1958, in fact, it was chosen among the furnishings of the Alitalia offices in Manhattan and in 1960 to furnish the Alitalia passenger terminal in Milan.
The new emerging trends at the Salone del Mobile 2021
Witness the ecological transition we are experiencing, even the lounge area he expressed his environmentalist spirit, from the attention to recycled and recyclable display materials to the commitment to the subsequent planting of trees used for decorative purposes.
The exhibiting companies were not far behind.

Many choose to present only green products, made with recycled raw materials, demonstrating the attention and commitment that design productions are showing for the environment.

Green furnishings will be one of the strongest trends in the coming years and the real challenge for creatives and companies of the sector will be to create objects with a reduced environmental impact that are also beautiful, functional and at the same time representative of the brand and of Made in Italy.
Furthermore, the Salone confirms once again what had already been highlighted: the Covid-19 pandemic has completely wiped out the luxury concept that was there before!
In contemporary living in the post-pandemic era, the real luxury is to have one home cocoon, a kind of super cozy and comfortable refuge house but absolutely technological.
The limits of the 2021 edition of the Salone del Mobile
For insiders like me, the Salone was a bit disappointing because what an interior designer actually expects from the Salone del Mobile is to go to the fair and see in a temporal and spatial concentration all the news of the companies in the sector, the most fashionable new collections. avant-garde, those that will then launch the trends of the seasons to come.

Get around the city for the Fuorisalone visiting showrooms and temporary installations is, on the other hand, quite another thing. More time and energy to invest to get to know a limited number of companies and news.
But as we have said, this new format of the Salone actually had other purposes, first of all to present to a general public the essence and excellence of design, especially the Made in Italy one.
And then it remains to be asked, what will it be like there next edition of the Salone del Mobile scheduled for April 2022?
We will go back to the pre-pandemic version or this Supersalone will score a route change?
