Interior artist, watercolor painter Juris Zīle has passed away / Diena


Farewell to Jura Zīle will take place on September 6 at 12.00 in the Great Hall of the Riga Cremation Center.

In 1958, the artist Juris Zīle graduated from the Department of Room Decorators of Riga Applied Arts High School (tag: PIKC Riga Design and Art High School) and obtained a diploma of room decoration and design specialist. In 1962, he entered the newly established Department of Interior and Equipment of the State Academy of Arts of the Latvian SSR (tag. functional design subsection of the Design Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts (LMA), which he graduated in 1967 with a diploma thesis – wall decor in metal Construction of the banks of the Daugava, project for the construction of Republika square, manager, architect Ivars Strautmanis (1932-2017). Jura Zīle’s teachers at LMA were architects Voldemārs Šusts (1929-2001), Modris Ģelzis (1929-2009), Vladimirs Šalajevs.

After studying at LMA, Juris Zīle was actively involved in interior design of public buildings. Worked as a senior methodologist in the Republican Methodical Cabinet of Club Work of the Ministry of Culture of the LPSR (1966-1976). In 1972, he started working as a creative artist in the LPSR Art Fund (MF) combine Art (1972-1976), and after the reorganization of MF, from 1976 he cooperated with the newly established MF Decorative Arts Combine (1976-1987). Later worked in an agency Advertising of Latvian cooperation (1987-1992), worked in the field of graphic design.

Juris Zīle participated in the development and creation of interiors in cooperation with MF combines. The wall paintings included in the projects were created in a monumental manner, and in the fantastic landscapes the artist emphasized an expressive interplay of colors and rhythms and distanced himself from the details of the plot. Juris Zīle participated in the development of interiors for the Republican Methodical Cabinet of Club Work of the Ministry of Culture of the LPSR (1970), for the Marriage Registration Rooms of the Executive Committee of the village of Ķegum (1971), tag. Sigulda region, Sigulda parish culture house (1972), Salaspils cooperative methodical cabinet (1976, 1981), Riga city ex. For the Moscow District House of Culture (1986), collective farm Warp (Valmiera district, 1988) and tag. For the interior of the Naukšēni Culture House of Valmiera region (1988-1989). The artist created monumental murals for canteens for a reinforced concrete factory Sigulda (1982) and Riga TEC-2 (together with painters Juri Zvirbuli, Jānis Kalnmali, Pēteri Postažu, 1984).

Juris Zīle participated in exhibitions with his watercolor works from 1963. He held personal exhibitions in Kaķenieks (Dobeles prov., 1984), Riga (1991), Sigulda (Summer Flower Conversations, Sigulda county, Sigulda parish Culture House, 2013), also in the USA (1989), etc. The artist’s works have been exhibited in LMS Art day in watercolor exhibitions (1968, 1969), exhibitions Decor-interior (1970, 1971), Art masters for spring (Dailes theater, 2001) etc

Juris Zīle also worked as a teacher – at the Jūrmala Pioneer House (1958-1960), Bulduri Horticultural Technical School (tag. Bulduru Horticultural High School), J. Rozentāls Art High School (tag. PIKC NMV Jani Rozentālas Art School; st. 1968-1969) and Latvia Academy of Arts.

Juris Zīle was a member of the Artists’ Union of Latvia from 1972, and the recommendations for admission to the LMS artist were issued by painters Nikolajs Petraškevičs (1909-1976), Edgars Bauze (1913-2006) and Bruno Aide (1913-1994).

The watercolor works of Jura Zīle are located in G. Elias Jelgava Museum of History and Art, private collections in Latvia, USA, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Israel, etc.

The Artists’ Union of Latvia expresses its deep condolences to the relatives and colleagues of the artist Jura Zīles.
