Intel CEO Robert Swan resigns, who will replace him?

January 13, 2021
This is a transcript of an interview between Intel and Susquehanna, from which we learned about the state of the 10nm process, the development of new processor generations, or that Robert Swan is due to end in office soon. That’s it has now been confirmed, with Swan retiring on February 15, when he will be replaced by his current VMWare counterpart, Patrick Gelsinger.

Robert Swan

This fact has already been announced by Intel itself, and in response, the value of its shares jumped by 7 percent, while VMWare shares fell by just as many percent.

Patrick Gelsinger

Bob Swan was named CEO of Intel in early 2019, for many months served as interim executive director after Brian Krzanich was resigned officially due to a relationship with his subordinate. Swan has taken over Intel, which is already in the ear in a technological crisis from which it has not been able to get it out in two and a half years, so now the task is falling into Gelsinger’s lap. Earlier, she was criticized for Intel’s choice because Swan was chosen as CEO without technical experience, and he had previously held the position of CFO of the company.

Although Pat Gelsinger comes directly from VMWare, where he has been the CEO since 2012, he previously worked at EMC, but before that he was the first CTO (technical director) at Intel. In addition, he also held the positions of Vice President and General Manager of the Digital Enterprise Group division at Intel.

We’ll see if we soon find out which direction Gelsinger wants to go and what his first steps will be. He returns to his company, where he originally worked since 1979.

As for the referenced conversation between Intel and Susquehanna, we can now say that the information is true. First, the departure of Robert Swan has now been confirmed to us, and then it has become clear that the Ice Lake-SP processors are really late. It seems that the development of Intel’s 7nm process is in bigger problems than previously thought, that Rocket Lake-S itself is not perceived by Intel as a good choice, and that the aforementioned Ice Lake-SP will also not be processors to its liking. Gelsinger will probably have something to do to get Intel back on track.
