Instagram will launch competitor for Twitter this summer

Instagram would like to release a new app aimed at short text updates at the end of June. The app should compete with Twitter.

Meta is already testing the new app for Instagram users among celebrities and influencers, sources say against Bloomberg. According to social media expert Lia Haberman it is a ‘decentralized’ app, which can also work together with other apps, such as the Twitter alternative Mastodon. The name of the app is not yet known.

Same logins and followers as Instagram

Users sign up for the app with their Instagram login. Then they can sync their current followers. The usernames, bios, and lists of accounts users have blocked are the same as on Instagram. The text updates can be up to 500 characters long, which is shorter than the texts for Instagram posts.

It is also possible to post links, photos and videos of up to 5 minutes. The same guidelines apply to the messages as on Instagram. According to Haberman, the new app will not contain any advertisements for the time being, because the focus will initially be on rapid growth in the number of users.

The plans leaked in March, but Meta would now aim for a release at the end of June. Meta has not responded to the messages.

Twitter Rivals Grow After Musk Acquisition

Following the takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk at the end of October 2022, some users started looking for alternative platforms. The competing apps Mastodon and Bluesky, among others, benefited from this.

Meta has more often imitated popular apps and functions of competitors with Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. For example, the Instagram Stories were copied from Snapchat and the Reels videos from TikTok.
