Instagram: Is the Vertical Explore Feed coming soon?

Instagram is getting some inspiration from TikTok again. The social app is testing a new feed experience that brings videos even more to the fore – in the truest sense of the word.

Are there any big changes coming up on Instagram? Some tests indicate that the social app is planning an update for the Explore Page. Unlike TikTok, for example, this is not the center of the app. Rather, the “Following” feed is here, in which the contributions of the accounts that you are following are displayed. But now Instagram is testing a new, TikTok-like design for the Explore Page, which could mean that more focus will be placed on it soon.

As with TikTok: Swipe your way through the vertical Explore Feed

App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi discovered the test and shared a screen recording on Twitter. On this you can see that the new Explore Experience seems to be quite mature.

If you click on the Explore section on Instagram, you will get an overview of various posts that have been selected as interesting by the algorithm on the basis of various signals. Reels also have a prominent place in most of them and are displayed as larger tiles. If you kick on this, you get to the Reels Feed, which can be swiped vertically for an infinite amount of time. This is exactly what Instagram could now introduce for other content on the Explore Page. In the screen recording, Paluzzi shows what happens when he clicks on one of the tiles. A vertical feed opens up for him, which is very reminiscent of Reels or TikTok, from which Reels are ultimately also inspired. He can now swipe vertically through the posts. Carousel posts can also be displayed in the format. He can click through these like with stories.

No more space for photos: the app is designed for vertical videos

The disadvantage? It’s not entirely clear what square images would look like in this feed. Again it becomes clear how much Instagram is laying the future of the app on video content. Just recently, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri announced that Instagram was no longer a photo platform. Even for the feed, the company had tested opening and playing videos in full screen.

The advantages for Instagram are obvious: users should be entertainted in the app and stay there for a correspondingly long time. This currently works better with video content than with anything else. And Mosseri himself admitted that TikTok is currently still ahead of the game. No wonder that Instagram is now doing everything it can to imitate TikTok. It remains to be seen whether the Full Screen Explore Feed will help. It is also not yet clear whether this will be rolled out at all.
