Mercedes-Benz G-Class fans receive news they thought they would never receive. What are the plans of the premium manufacturer with the legendary model?
Mercedes-Benz plans to offer the G-Class in the electric version. The German manufacturer has already registered the name ‘EGQ’. “EQ” is the sub-brand dedicated to electric cars. EQC, EQA, EQV are already part of the range and the EQS limousine will join them.
The confirmation of the registration was made on April 1, 2021, but it is far from a joke. The company’s CEO, the Swede Ola Kallenius, announced in 2019 that the off-roader will receive an electric version. The head of Daimler did not then offer any deadline for its launch. The time is now near.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class in electric version – What power will it have?
The names registered by Mercedes are EQG 580 and EQG 560. The Germans do not provide any official information. But the code 580 is conclusive. It will be the same propulsion system that the EQS limousine will receive, which will appear in showrooms in August of this year. It is a system with two electric motors, one on each of the two axles, ensuring all-wheel drive. Together they will develop 516 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque. The EQG 580 should also take over the EQS battery. It is a unit with a capacity of 108 kWh, which will ensure the sedan a record range of over 700 kilometers. We can expect similar figures from the model produced at the Magna Steyr plant in Austria.
The EQG 560 would be the entry-level version. But it should also have two electric motors, to provide the model with the skills that have established him outside the asphalt.
Most likely, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in the electric version will keep the three differential locks. However, it is unclear whether Mercedes will resort to the new EVA platform, reserved for electric cars, or will keep the classic structure with the ladder chassis.
We still have to wait until we see an EQG on the roads or off-road. It will not be ready before 2024.
