Increase Public Trust About Vaccines, Massive Education is the Key

January 12, 2021

Suara.com – Epidemiologists say the only way to increase public confidence in the Covid-19 vaccine is to carry out massive education.

Reported by ANTARA, the Head of the West Sumatra Provincial Branch of the Indonesian Epidemiology Association, Defriman Djafri, said that communication and education efforts must be carried out massively in order to strengthen public confidence in following vaccinations to control the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The key is to make IEC (communication, information and education) efforts now, because experience so far in the field is the biggest challenge, the government or the task force team (task force) must prepare a strategy to explain, both in terms of trust, security, effectiveness and including KIPI. (post-immunization follow-up) in the future, “said Defriman who is also the Dean of the Faculty of Public Health, Andalas University when contacted by ANTARA from Jakarta, Tuesday (12/1/2021).

Defriman said strategies in the regions could involve religious, customary and community leaders, including experts who are competent in explaining, both in terms of trust, security, effectiveness and including KIPI.

Thus, he said, doubts about receiving vaccines can be minimized and in the future public trust can be built.

On the other hand, according to Defriman, public trust in the government also affects confidence in the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Plus the issue because the vaccine is from China, the public also questions the quality of this vaccine from China. This requires a complete and comprehensive explanation of information from the government and competent experts in their fields,” said Defriman.

According to him, if the implementation of restrictions on community activities (PPKM) in Java-Bali is carried out properly with proper enforcement of laws or regulations, it will be very effective in reducing the risk of transmission and death.

The increase in COVID-19 cases in early 2021, according to him, is due to the mobility of people who have greatly contributed to the increase in cases so far.

“This condition also proves that the health protocol has not been maximally implemented in the community,” he said.
