Valašské Meziříčí (Vsetínsko) – Another of the so-called marches behind Bečva will take place this afternoon in Valašské Meziříčí in the Vsetínsko region. By participating in a protest parade, people are demanding a fair investigation into last year’s river poisoning. In September, according to the Czech Environmental Inspectorate, cyanides leaked into it, which damaged the aquatic habitat on about 40 kilometers of the river from Valašské Meziříčí to Přerov. At that time, fishermen took more than 40 tons of fish to the rendering plant.
Protesters will meet at 14:00 on Valašské Meziříčí Square. “Then we will move to the confluence of Rožnovská and Vsetínská Bečva in a protest procession. Due to the current unfavorable epidemiological situation, it will be an unorganized happening. We expect only short speeches during the march, including the planned Skalička dam,” said Jan Husák.
According to him, based on the announced interest on social networks, it can be expected that participation in the protest will not be small. “It is evident that the case still resonates strongly with the public,” Husák added. Thousands of people signed the petition to clarify the procedure of the authorities.
The culprit of the ecological accident on September 20 is unknown. The police are still waiting for the expert’s opinion. The key report on the analysis of water samples was originally to be completed by 20 December, after which the expert requested a longer period. The police said that if the new circumstances of the case were known, they would publish them. The length of the investigation is criticized by many politicians and the public. Experts in Monday’s program Reporters of the Czech Television said that sampling after the accident in Bečva was delayed and insufficient.
