In Romania, half of those newly diagnosed with cancer do NOT survive

Dr. biol. Violeta Astratinei: In Romania, half of those newly diagnosed with cancer do not survive. We are, unfortunately, the country where those without money die for days.

Major events in recent times – such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine – have affected the basic systems of European states, with health being the most vulnerable sector. Innovative prevention and diagnostic methods, new therapies that offer life-saving benefits to patients may have little impact on a fragile medical system.

In these conditions, this year’s edition of the National Conference “Innovation in Melanoma 2022 – Life is a right for all”, which takes place on June 24 and 25, in Bucharest, addresses the situation of care for cancer patients in the context of launching programs reform of the health system and the national cancer plan.

Dr. biol. Violeta Astratinei: In Romania, half of those newly diagnosed with cancer do not survive

In Romania, half of those newly diagnosed with cancer do not survive. In 2020, we had 100,000 thousand new cases and, at the same time, over 50,000 deaths. According to the data, we can say that the burden of mortality in Romania is considerable.

Cancer mortality in Romania is higher than the European Union average. This unfortunately shows diagnostic deficiencies, but at the same time deficiencies in the way treatments are used.

“The differences would not be so great if we talk about all cancers. But if we take cancers individually, we will notice that there are differences between the mortality caused by that cancer between Western countries and our country.

For example, the Nordic countries have a 90% survival rate. In our country, patients with melanoma survive, and I mean those with metastatic melanoma because it causes mortality, around 55%, “said Dr. Biol. Violeta Astratinei, the president Melanom Romania Associationat the National Conference “Innovation in Melanoma 2022 – Life is a right for all”.

“We are, unfortunately, the country where those without money die for days, geographical and socio-economic differences in access to health care, we meet everywhere,” said Dr. Astratinei.

The disparities between rich and poor tend to widen:

  • 40% are at risk of poverty and social exclusion
  • between 22-27% are at risk of absolute poverty
  • one in 5 Romanians live in misery.

In Romania there is not even a national cancer registry

We spend the least on health care among EU countries, but we allow ourselves to spend too much on hospital services that remain at an outrageously low level for the times we live in.

We are no better off in research either. We are among the countries with few innovative treatments, and of the approved ones, some do not reach patients.

“Under these conditions, people will not go to a doctor to prevent, diagnose early or treat cancer. And we can imagine why. We are in last place in terms of breast cancer, for example. Because in melanoma there is no prevention. 40% of cancers are preventable and it is a shame not to use this opportunity to increase the cure rate of cancers

We are among the first countries in Europe to prevent preventable deaths and treatable deaths. If we cannot prevent and treat treatable diseases, it is not difficult to understand that we can barely cope with cancers, which in most cases are incurable in the metastable stage “, underlined the president of the Romania Melanoma Association.

A profound reform is impossible, given that in Romania there is not even a national cancer registry, and health reforms continue to be planned “blindly”.

The National Conference “Innovation in Melanoma 2022 – Life is a right for all”, which takes place on June 24 and 25 is organized by the Melanoma Romania Association with the support of MSD, Novartis, Bristol Myers Squibb and Sanofi.
