WASHINGTON – US employment picked up slightly in May and was in line with the average over the previous 12 months, the Labor Department said.

In the world’s largest economy, 339 thousand net new jobs were created in May, after a revised 294 thousand in April.
New data show that 93,000 more jobs were created in March and April than previous estimates of the ministry showed. The data for May is in line with the monthly average in the previous 12 months, which was 341 thousand new employees.
In the just ended month, the most new jobs were created in the professional, business and health services sector and in government services. Employment increased in construction and in the transport and storage sectors, as well as in the social protection system.
The private sector net created 283 thousand new jobs, and the state 56 thousand. The unemployment rate increased by 0.3 percent compared to April and amounted to 3.7 percent, reflecting an increase in the number of unemployed by 440 thousand, to 6.1 million.
