The State Environmental Service (VVD) and the consortium Depozita iepakojuma operators have signed an agreement on the establishment of a recycling container collection system in Latvia. A large-scale network of points and machines for receiving containers should begin work on February 1, 2022.

The consortium will soon begin negotiations with stores and retail chains, and if the estimated number of bottles handed over per month exceeds 3,000, a special automatic packaging machine will be installed in this store. In less popular places, store employees will continue to accept containers.

In general, it is planned to open 1,500 container collection points throughout Latvia: 700 of them will be automatic, and at 800 points the bottles will be accepted by store workers.

It will be possible to hand over plastic bottles (PET), cans from any drinks, as well as bottles from soft drinks, beer, cider and cocktails with a strength of up to 6% to such points. However, 5 liter bottles will not be accepted.

At the same time, upon purchase, a surcharge of 10 euro cents will be applied to the drink. The buyer will be able to return this money to himself if he will hand it over to the “taromats”. For the returned bottles, you can get cash or a coupon for purchases in a particular store.

Such devices will appear in our stores no earlier than February 2022.
