impossible to play this ultra gore game, here’s why

The big fans of survival horror and in particular of asymmetrical games will soon no longer be able to play this gore title adapted from a cult license of horror cinema. We explain why.

Great horror game fans have plenty to find their account on the multitude of titles of the genre that come out regularly, and regardless of the platform. Recently, we told you aboutAmnesia : The Bunker, which has been a hit on Steam since its release. A game in which you are stuck in a bunker with only a monster as your only companion, desperate to decimate you.

In another genre, others are more oriented towards titles like the excellent Dead By Daylight, Multiplayer horror game with asymmetrical gameplay. The principle is simple: you and 3 other players must survive a killer (himself embodied by a player). Here, the interest is that usually short games are procedurally generated.

This type of game is particularly popular with gamers who want to share their fears with others. In the same vein, the IllFonic studio has developed a video game adaptation of the Friday the 13th cinema license, “Friday the 13th”, released in 2017. The principle : 7 players must survive the time of a night on a campus during which they are tracked by the famous antagonist Jason Voorhees. The latter must be defeated through teamwork and foolproof strategy. The game is over when all players are killed, or if Jason is eliminated.

Unfortunately, the killer will soon have no more victims. Publisher Gun Media issued a press release announcing that the title will soon expire, on December 31:

The time has come. Our license for Friday the 13th will expire on December 31, 2023. On that date, Friday the 13th: The Game will no longer be available for sale, both physically and digitally.

Until then, the studio still specifies that the game will remain playable until December 31, 2023. But after this date, it will no longer be possible to obtain it, in a dematerialized version as well as in physical format.

The game will, however, continue to run until at least December 31, 2024, if you already own it. For now, we have made the decision to reduce the price to $4.99 for the base game and $0.99 for each piece of DLC content. We will continue to offer the title and its content at this price until it is removed from physical and digital stores on December 31, 2023.

However, the studio does not forget to thank its community, and is happy that “the game may live a little longer”. The reason for this withdrawal is related to legal problems encountered by the team and the director and author of the film Friday 13 from 1980. A trial that began in 2019, 2 years after the release of the game. Victor Miller, screenwriter of the first film Friday 13 won the first round which pitted him against director Sean Cunningham, partner of this video game adaptation. Consequence: the developer Gun Media no longer has the right to bring any content to its game.

However, this did not prevent Friday the 13th to be released on Nintendo Switch in August 2019. So, if you don’t know this survival horror, you still have until December 31 to find out.
