Vålerenga ice hockey has received several positive virus tests in recent days. A total of eight people have now been confirmed infected with corona.
This is confirmed by Vålerenga’s sports manager Frikk Juell to NTB on Thursday.
– In the team and the support apparatus, 33 tests have been performed. We have received 26 responses, and eight have had corona detected, says Juell.
As a result of the contagion situation in the club, Vålerenga’s entire squad is currently either in isolation or in quarantine.
Juell emphasizes that the club is in close dialogue with the municipal chief in Oslo and the infection tracking team. On Thursday, Vålerenga tested the entire team and the support apparatus again. Answers are expected in the next few days.
Full stop
A number of clubs in the elite series of ice hockey have been affected by outbreaks recently. On Monday, Vålerenga stated that two people in the club had been diagnosed with the infection.
Now the number has been increased to eight, and it still remains to get answers to all the virus tests that have been given in recent days.
In addition to Vålerenga, Sparta, Stjernen, Frisk Asker, Stavanger, Storhamar and Manglerud Star have had outbreaks recently.
On Friday last week, the Norwegian Ice Hockey Association decided that the match activity in the elite series should be stopped to gain control of the infection situation. There is also a full stop in the elite series for women and 1st division for men.
Not quite an overview
When matches will be restarted is uncertain for the time being. On Thursday, there was a meeting between the management of the hockey association and the clubs. Prior to the meeting, the union’s general secretary Ottar Eide informed NTB that the first possible date for the restart of the elite series is 26 January.
– It can quickly become later. We do not have a clear overview of how many are infected. We will have a meeting with the clubs later today, so then we will get a better overview, he said.
Several hockey referees have also been infected with the coronavirus recently.
Work is now underway to look at possible scenarios to complete the current season. In an interview with NTB recently, Eide said that the hockey association aims to complete 36 series rounds, where all teams meet four times. In addition, the playoff format is discussed.
