I started drawing when I was little, like any child, only I never stopped

Friday starts the DIPLOMA Show, the festival that shows, every year, the promises of our creative industry, from design and architecture to art, fashion and technology. Over the past month, we spoke to this year’s participants about their projects, their creative themes, their work process, and trends in their field.

Bianca Slippergraduate of Graphics, at UAD Cluj-Napoca, proposes a serious topic of thought through her work, “Sorry, sorry”, which explores the tension between man and space through a kind of prison of stuffed animals.

I always start with a little self-reflection and where I fit in the current context. I ask myself a series of questions, such as, what kind of media has been relevant to me lately, what caught my attention most when I was walking down the street, how can I capture a narrative uncertainty of an image inspired by human clichés, says Bianca.

The DIPLOMA Show takes place between October 7 and 16, 2022, at the Fondului Plastic Complex in Bucharest. The best work of this year’s creative graduates will be showcased at the 9th edition DIPLOMA Showthe festival dedicated to the new generations of Romanian artists, architects and designers, organized by The Institute.

We talk to Bianca, before the festival, about her artistic journey, sources of inspiration and the community of young Romanian creators.

your story

It’s not a special or different story, I started drawing when I was little, like any child, only I never stopped. I attended a theoretical, math-info high school, but artistic concerns still remained my main interest. I just couldn’t find anything more permanent in my life that attracted me and it was a natural move to continue in this area.

The topics that concern you

Currently I try more to take on a “persona” of an observer. I like to follow moments common to the space around me, desensitize them and render them in a form of permanent but uncertain existence alienated from the human.

Your creative process

I always start with a little self-reflection and where I fit in the current context. I ask myself a series of questions, such as, what kind of media has been relevant to me lately, what caught my attention most when I was walking down the street, how can I capture a narrative uncertainty of an image inspired by human clichés.

Trends in graphics in

At least in the social framework around me I like the new trend of experimentation and in the context of mediums and techniques, but also of the topics covered. An artistic excess is much more relevant now.

The project selected for Diploma 2022

I’ve recently started experimenting with volumetrics and it came naturally to work in the medium most relevant to me at the moment. I started from the analysis of contrasts and the relationship with materiality to evoke an unnatural situation, a tension between man and space. In order to reproduce a discomfort and fragment existence, I used building materials, impersonal by association with the urban environment, contrasted with plush elements, closer by texture and which retain human traces by association with memory.

The work process took less time than I expected. A long part of the time was collecting all the materials, mainly because I didn’t know the construction field very well. It was a little hard to get used to the way it worked, but it was nice to try something new.

Diploma artistic community

I believe that every participant brings something new, nothing different to me. It is a community that brings together projects that complement each other technically and thematically and make the contemporary art industry relevant.

As far as I have observed, there are artistic communities with the same interests that are formed from a common passion, but also that bring different people together and include the contemporary art present on various levels.
