Hyundai racing simulator used by Spanish hospital

A short time ago the Beata Maria Ana Hospital de España put into practice a new and innovative therapy, developed by the same hospital, which uses Hyundai’s racing simulator, to treat patients with acquired brain damage.

After 3 months of its start-up, this therapy has given very good results and so much so that other centers that work with this type of patients are very interested in it.

The coordinator of the Brain Injury Unit of the Beata María And Hospital, Dr. Marcos Ríos-Lago, noted that «The use of the simulator, once its software has been adapted to our therapeutic needs, improves the cognitive abilities of the patients, such as attention, speed and perception. In addition, it also improves motor skills, which will allow retraining to drive on public roads«.

This is the first time that Hyundai’s racing simulator has been installed in a Spanish hospital to routinely treat patients with this type of acquired brain damage. The simulator is a tool that helps patients regain their skills and abilities, which they need to be able to drive again.

For his part, the general director of Hyundai Motor Spain, Leopold Satrústegui, commented that «It is a source of pride for our company to actively participate in this project and to see how the results are being so positive in such a short time. As in Hyundai Motor Company, in Hyundai Motor Spain our DNA always leads us to develop actions that help to improve the society in which we live, either the whole or a small part, as it happens in this project ».

Even despite the positive results, according to Dr. Marcos Ríos-Lago it is «It is still too early to assess the degree of success of the program and the percentage of patients who will be able to drive again, but what the scientific literature does indicate is that, those who return to driving after specific training in this skill do not show differences with the rest of the population in claims or difficulties of any kind«.

Dr. Rios-Lago also emphasizes another aspect that benefits from the use of Hyundai’s racing simulator, noting that “some patients are not aware of the new limitations they suffer after injury. About, in certain cases the simulator will help these people to better assess the implications of their injury, making them aware of the risk of driving again while they are not prepared for it. In this sense, the intervention program also incorporates a help process in the event that the person is finally unable to drive safely again.«.

This simulator allows professionals to take advantage of and optimize the adjustment possibilities it offers, such as reaction capacity, visual field and other things no less important that help in the patient’s recovery. Regarding this, Dr. Ríos-Lago commented[o que «Disponer de la ayuda tecnológica que aporta el simulador tiene un valor empírico extraordinario«.
