After numerous rumors and prototypes sightings, finally Hyundai has announced the arrival of the new Kona N. We remember that the “N” represents for the South Korean manufacturer what “M” and “AMG” represent, for example, for BMW and Mercedes: it identifies the sportiest models in the range.
The Kona N will join the new i30 and i20 in the range of models enriched by the Hyundai racing department. It is likely that the “hot SUV” (as the house itself defines it) will incorporate many solutions already present on the i30.
Camouflaged but recognizable
The first official photos show a Kona still wrapped in heavy camouflage that does not allow to recognize the details that will distinguish the N version. However, the sporty imprint is evident with a lowered set-up, large rims (probable measures up to 19 “) and an area rear ugly by the large tailpipes.
The black alloy wheels look the same as the new i30 N, which have been lightened by about 14 kg compared to those mounted by the previous model. The aileron with the characteristic triangular third stop borrowed from the i30 N.
The Kona has recently undergone restyling both in the thermal engine and the electric version and the new one should therefore resume the main elements of style. As already happened with the i20 and i30, however, we can expect a number of identifying details such as the red inserts in the front and rear bumpers.
The official photos do not yet show the cockpit, but even in this case it is reasonable to expect the presence of some elements of the new i30 N. The main novelties of the sports hatchback were the addition of the N Light seats in alcantara and illuminated badge and the 10.25 ”touchscreen. A test example at the Nürburgring was also photographed with Recaro sports seats.
The roar of the 2.0 turbo
To make the Kona N different from all other compact SUVs, however, will be the engine. Hyundai talks about a 2.0 turbo associated with the 8-speed N DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The recipe is therefore the same as the i30 N. The restyling of the compact sports car will soon be available in a double declination of 250 and, in the Performance version, of 280 horsepower. The performance guaranteed by the Performance package allows Hyundai to deliver 392 Nm, sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km / h.
Hyundai itself has admitted the presence of Launch Control and an “exciting sound”. Indeed, the video teaser gives us a sound taste of what the rumble of 2.0 will be.
Finally, it is plausible that N mode will be revived which transforms the car into a real track monster.
