Did you know that Hyundai has a performance division? Hyundai N is the Korean manufacturer’s equivalent of the BMW M and Mercedes-AMG. Soon it’s time for model number three, Kona N.
Two will soon be three. The first N model from Hyundai was the i30 N, which debuted in 2017. A really drivable and competent challenger in the Golf class, but no ordinary view of the roads.
Most recently, the i30 N received an update of the milder kind. The standard model still produces 250 hp, but the Performance version jumped up by five riders to a total of 280.
This year is coming too the smaller i20 N, and it is extra exciting because it is based on the car that Hyundai competes with in the World Rally Championship, WRC.
But even before the start of sales of the smallest, Hyundai announces that the family will be expanded with the third model Kona N.
– We are enthusiastic about building on the recipe for success developed from i30 N, further with i20 N and now to one of our most popular SUV models on the market, Kona, says Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Vice President of Marketing & Product at Hyundai Motor Europe. The addition of Kona to the N-family will take our performance brand to the next level.
Some exact data is not presented yet but that Kona N gets an eight-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox, known as the N DCT, is clear. It is combined with a 2.0-liter turbo engine at an as yet unknown power level.
However, a bunch of performance features have been confirmed, such as launch control.
When the Kona N will go on sale is not announced, but it will happen in 2021. Finally, did you know that Hyundai has a name for its N owners, they are called “N-thusiasts”. Ingenious!
