HvA and UvA affected by cyber attack

Unknown third parties have gained access to the ICT environments of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam, the Security and Operations Center has found.

Becoming measures met to limit the consequences and to ensure that education and research can proceed as undisturbed as possible.

The schools have disabled several systems as a precaution. Staff and students are advised not to make backups of their files themselves, because the UvA already has offline backups.

The UvA leaves on Foil know that there are no indications that personal data has currently been leaked or that ‘the attack is aimed at obtaining personal data’. The intruders also do not seem to be after research data, the university reports.

In the interest of the investigation, it is not possible to elaborate on the background and extent of this attack. Often this secrecy indicates ransomware.

Earlier this week, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research was also hit by a cyber attack.
