Hürth: Residents in Efferen are angry – roadblock causes trouble

A concrete ring and barrier beacons have been blocking the passage at the diagonal lock on Kalscheurener Strasse for days. This is intended to keep through traffic to the north-east industrial area out of the residential area in Efferen-Ost. Local residents have been asking for this for a long time. But as soon as the street is closed, there is renewed protest in the neighborhood – against the closure.

How to relieve traffic in the residential area has been a concern of planners and politicians for decades. Residents demanded that Kalscheurener Straße be tied down, the media companies in the industrial area were against it. Reason: Many visitors would take this route from Luxemburger Straße. The transport committee found a compromise: the lock was built in front of Robert-Bosch-Straße, which could only be passed in the direction of the industrial park, but not in the opposite direction. Trucks weren’t allowed through at all.

Hürth: The barrier was broken in the first few days

But many drivers did not adhere to the regulation. With a bizarre chicane, the city tried in 2006 to at least keep the trucks away. A barrier was installed at a height of two meters, which broke in the first few days and was not hung up again after criticism from the police and the ADAC.

The transport committee agreed that the lock should be closed as soon as the industrial park is connected to the new bypass road (B 265n) – this has been the case since spring. The chairman of the committee, Herbert Verbrüggen (CDU), called in March to implement the resolution of September 2019. The administration now complied with this.

Path to bypass B 265n cut off

In the meantime, a discussion has broken out on the Internet. Readers also contacted this newspaper. One of them complains that the situation has “gotten significantly worse”. The road to the bypass was also cut off for residents and commuters. If you want to drive out of the quarter in the direction of Brühl and Erftstadt, only Rondorfer Straße remains. There, turning left onto the busy Luxemburger Strasse is a “game of patience”.

Verbrüggen, who had called for the blockage much earlier, defends the measure: “This is a considerable relief for the residents.” However, he admitted that the timing was not a good one. Because in the course of the planned four-lane expansion of Luxemburger Straße in Efferen, the diagonal barrier is to be temporarily opened again in order to temporarily pave another way out of their neighborhood for residents during the construction phase. The lock was therefore initially only temporarily barricaded, said administration spokesman Willi Pütz. But the city will probably make some improvements to the temporary solution as well. Because now small cars bypass the barrier on the bike path.
