Hungary’s first solar roof tile plant

Today, the unique Terrán Generon solar roof tile factory of the more than 100-year-old construction company was put into operation in Pécs. With this, the company has taken another step towards committed support for economic growth and a sustainable future. Minister of Finance Mihály Varga also paid tribute at the inauguration of the factory.

As a responsible manufacturer, in addition to customer satisfaction, Terrán has always kept environmentally friendly thinking in mind. As sustainability becomes an increasingly integral part of people’s daily lives, the company also strives to set a positive example for the industry.

In many cases, the renovation of the roof is at the top of the wish list of Hungarian families planning to modernize their homes, and more and more people are also planning to install their own solar system. For all this, there are several types of public support for the installation of residential solar panels and the related heating modernization. The thus increased market demand gave birth to Terra’s unique Generon solar roof tile factory.

“The Hungarian construction industry is one of the leading sectors in relaunching the economy, increasing its performance by a fifth in July year-on-year. Investments that increase efficiency have a key role to play in relaunching the economy, which is why the government supports the spread of renewable energy and green solutions. Terran successfully applied for the resources of the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Program, with which it built a world-class manufacturing plant in Pécs, ”said Mihály Varga, Minister of Finance.

“The production line and technology installed at the Generon factory in Pécs have been developed and built specifically according to our needs. When designing it, we defined a flexible modular line configuration, which will enable the production of a wider range of product versions in the field of small-scale solar cells in the future. It is important to know that in addition to semiconductor wafers, glass and connectors, we make everything necessary for the production of the product, ”says Árpád Jankó, Head of the Generon Division.

Since the introduction of the product, nearly 200 homes and public buildings have been powered by the Generon system, which means a total of more than 75,000 built-in modules. It is planned that this number could reach 100,000 in 2021, so by the end of the year we will encounter solar roof tiles on the roofs of approximately 250 buildings.
Thanks to the continuous innovation related to Generon, an improved, even more beautiful product will be available from the end of this year. In addition, thanks to the 3-year R&D agreement with the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, further progress is expected in the field of product development.

“It is a huge pride for us that our Generon solar roof tiles can be made on the company group’s sixth automatic production line. We based our decision to establish the factory on the smooth service of the growing market demands. Economic indicators and customer feedback also indicate that we are on the right track. Our goal is to have at least 200,000 Generons rolled off the production line every year, to further increase the product’s competitiveness and to install as many solar roof tiles as possible for green electricity production, ”says Attila Gódi, Managing Director of Terrán Tetőcserép Gyártó Kft.

It all started with the work of 3 people in 1920, and in 2021 the company already employs almost 400 people, of whom 308 currently work in Hungary. The latest Generon plant will provide employment for 20 new people, which could even triple in the near future in light of overseas sales.

In the surrounding countries, the mapping of the markets and the establishment of the market introduction of Generon are already underway.
“According to our plans, sales will officially start on the Croatian and Romanian markets from next year, there is a high level of preliminary interest, and the conditions for placing the product on the market are in place. In addition, since we have had our own concrete tile production unit in Romania since 2018, we have provided all other transport, storage and service options, ”says Szabolcs Tóth, Regional Marketing Director.

The Generon solar roof tile is currently a unique development internationally and to our knowledge it is the only solar panel integrated into a commercially available roof tile. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that by incorporating this, the roof imperceptibly gets the role of utilizing green energy in addition to the original, protective function. This is especially important for our customers, as the appearance, aesthetics and impact of their home on the environment accompany the people living there through a lifetime.
