After our review of the top Huawei Watch 3 Pro, the best smartwatch of the company to date, it’s time to see the “vanilla” model, the Huawei Watch 3! It has many of the features of the Pro but it is more affordable and may be better suited to some of you so … let’s go see it!
First impressions & Design
Opening the package, the watch appears and inside, one USB Type-C cable with built-in compact charging dock which is magnetic and “fastens” very easily on the back of the watch, without having to “mark” any charging pin or pins. We had the watch with it leather, brown strap, which exudes high aesthetics and will match perfectly with your summer outfits, while the straps are easily changed with more sporty or metallic ones, to achieve the look you want in every occasion!
The body of the watch (46mm) is black or silver, made of stainless steel with a ceramic back, while durable crystal covers its screen, which we found to be difficult to scratch under normal conditions and you will have to be very unlucky or careless to scratch / crack it. Of course the watch is waterproof based on IP68 standard and waterproof in pool or at sea (5 ATM), although the company emphasizes that it is not suitable for diving at great depths or for exposure to high pressure / water speed (eg jet ski). Its weight without the strap it is close to 54gr and its thickness reaches 12.5mm, without including the rear knob of the sensors. This is a premium construction with a discreet design that catches the eye, depending on the strap (22mm) you choose.
At the same time, its screen that is AMOLED, 1.43 “with a resolution of 466×466 pixels designed to stand out! Of course it supports touch and gestures, while on the right side there is a classic key and the new one “crown”, rotary knob which gives a “classic” note to the design and will greatly help you navigate through the menu and clock options, even zoom-in/out on all screens / applications that support it. Note that there is also a light sensor for automatic adjustment of the screen brightness, which is very clear and glare-free even in bright sunshine. In the “heart” of Watch 3 is one powerful chipset which offers smooth and fast operation on the watch. Combined with 16GB of storage which in practice can hold up to 2,000 MP3 tracks but also … 2GB RAM, with high-end smartwatches slowly reaching the specs of entry-level smartphones! Of course, you can save locally your music on the clock (via Bluetooth from your smartphone’s Huawei Health app) and connect it wirelessly to Bluetooth (support BT 5.2, BLE / BR / EDR) your headphones, so that you hear what you want during the exercise, without having your mobile phone with you.
The Watch GT 3 vibrates and alerts you to incoming calls, with the possibility of rejecting them. You can, of course, see SMS, emails and other notifications while the wide variety of watchfaces (and the ability to customize them) will satisfy you. The built-in functions are many and include timer, countdown, barometer, altitude, compass, alarm clock, etc. At the back there is an optician heart rate sensor which works very well and can detect your pulse 24/7. In general, it has everything a power user who loves wearables needs! In addition, its measurement is supported blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), the monitoring your sleep (TruSleep) but also the detect your stress (TruRelax), while it can guide you through breathing exercises to relax during the day.
In addition, however, the Watch 3 series have e.g, so they can very easily replace (for a few hours) our smartphone (eg in the gym, the beach or a walk in the countryside), without losing our communication with the world. The built-in GPS is a given and so you do not need any other device with you for a training session. Maybe just your wireless Bluetooth headset, which you can connect directly to the watch to listen to music!
Another special feature is the Temperature sensor. Adapted to the demands of the modern age, the Watch 3 can even detect differences in the temperature of our skin, which may indicate fever and some disease / illness. In addition, it may remind you to wash your hands, which is a must in the midst of a pandemic, of course. Would you expect a few years ago that all this would be controlled without doing anything, from a simple watch on your wrist?
Finally, the precious, even … SOS rescue operation. In case of detection of the user’s fall (and confirmation of his condition through the other health sensors) they can automatically send a message for help to predefined contacts or where needed. A truly life-saving function for both seniors living alone and nature lovers isolated in remote locations, as the built-in GPS and eSim allow the watch to send the user’s position directly for assistance. It is not a few times that a smart watch has saved lives in similar cases and now you can have this feature at your disposal with the new Huawei watches.
For fitness lovers and lovers of well-being, the Huawei watch shows … its “teeth”, in collaboration with Huawei Health which has developed into a very capable platform, providing a detailed analysis of your physical activity. With 100+ different training and exercise programs (19 professional modes, for indoor and outdoor sports and 85 custom modes, with automatic exercise detection for the 6 most common types of training), the Watch 3 easily transforms into a real tech “supership” that will help you adopt a more fit and active lifestyle, enabling you to take full control of your health.
We close with autonomy, which is very important in such a device. The battery promises 2 weeks without charging in a good scenario, which includes: Ultra-long life battery mode enabled, 24/7 heart rate detection, sleep detection every night, 30 ‘Bluetooth calls per week, 90’ exercise each week and notifications enabled, with screen enabled 200 times a day. A scenario that is possible for many users, so realistically, even if you exercise more or have more notifications daily, you will definitely get 1 week with 1 charge.
The “heavy” scenario in which the battery lasts 3 days (1.5 days on iOS, unfortunately!), concerns the following: 2 hours of LTE connectivity daily, 22 hours of Bluetooth mobile connection daily, 24/7 heart rate detection, sleep detection every night, 60 ‘use of Apps every week, 30’ calls via Bluetooth every week, 90 ‘exercise each week (WITH GPS enabled) and notifications activated, with the screen activated 200 times a day. Essentially what … consumes the battery is the LTE connectivity and the many voice calls through the watch, but also the fitness tracking with GPS enabled. Even so, 3 days is relatively good autonomy. Note how it is supported 10W charging and how Watch 3 can recharge and wirelessly from a smartphone that supports reverse wireless charging.
Smartwatch with … everything!
The Huawei Watch 3 is already available in Greece for €399 and this is a super dynamic and interesting proposal that is sure to cater to even the most demanding wearables lovers. It shows that the company has now climbed into the ultra high-end category of devices and wearables, so it can “look” in the eyes of the tough competition of Samsung and Apple, with features that are at the forefront of technology and excellent appearance. A choice for a few but that absolutely justifies its price!
