Huawei unveiled the folding Mate X2 smartphone for the Chinese market

The Mate X2 discards the folding screen outside of its predecessors and instead relies on the familiar inside folding main screen from Samsung Galaxy Fold phones.

Huawei has unveiled a new third-generation foldable smartphone – the Huawei Mate X2 – in a Keynote presentation live on YouTube today. The phone was released at the event only for the Chinese market, and there is no information yet on wider availability.

After the Mate Xs, released last year, is essentially an annual update to the original Mate X, the Mate X2 brings with it a completely revamped design that discards the obsolete off-screen display used in older models. Instead, the Mate X2 relies on the familiar style of Samsung Galaxy Fold phones to use a pair of smaller-than-traditional screens as a pair of inside-bending main screens that stay out of the phone.

The size of the internal display has remained unchanged at 8-inch as well as the resolution, but its refresh rate has been raised from 60 Hz to a higher 90 Hz in line with current market trends. The outside screen has a size of 6.45 ”and a resolution of 2700 × 1160. In addition, the outdoor display, like the internal display, supports a refresh rate of 90 Hz. The aspect ratio of the external display is 21: 9, familiar from many standard phones today, making the phone somewhat wider than the Samsung Folds. The aspect ratio of the remaining main screen is more special 8: 7.1.

Despite a similarly flexible display, the Huawei Mate X2 stands out from Samsung’s foldable phones with its hinge solution. Huawei is promoting its new Multi-Dimensional Hinge Design hinge, which allows the phone to bend almost virtually even when closed. With a smaller gap, the hinge also improves the surface of the screen itself, according to Huawei, reducing the size of the wrinkle visible at the fold.

For the phone’s camera system, one side of the phone is thicker than the other, making the phone slightly wedge-shaped when opened, even when the phone is almost flat when closed. The main camera is a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera, paired with a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera that also acts as a macro camera with a minimum focusing distance of 2.5 cm and two separate cameras: a 12-megapixel triple-zoom camera and an 8-megapixel 10x zoom camera. Of the cameras, all except the ultra-wide-angle camera have optical image stabilization.

Inside the Mate X2, the Kirin 9000 system chip with 5 nm technology, familiar from the Mate 40 series, pulsates with 8 GB of RAM and 256 or 512 GB of storage, depending on the model. The phone is powered by a 4500 mAh battery that supports 55 watts of fast charging. As an operating system, the phone still has an Android 10 EMUI 11 interface that is more than a year and a half old. With the trade war situation between the US and China, the Mate X2 will also not see Google services, which is probably the reason for the old version of Android as well.
