A lot of technology is required for calls and data to end up on your mobile phone. Most of this is beyond your control – the mobile service provider is responsible for operation and the elimination of interference. But there are also reception problems that you can fix yourself with a few simple steps. This is especially true when there is a sudden lack of reception in frequently visited places where you can otherwise rely on good coverage.

Turn airplane mode on and off

In the simplest case, it helps if you turn your smartphone’s flight mode on and off again. In this way, you explicitly instruct the cell phone to search the area for available networks and then log into the cell phone network again.

In Apples iOS Access Airplane Mode from Control Center. Depending on the iOS version, there are different ways to access Airplane mode:

  • Older iOS versions lead to the control center at the bottom of the screen. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to view it.
  • Current iOS versions house the control center at the top of the screen. Swiping the right half of the top edge of the display towards the center of the screen displays the control center.

restart phone

A smartphone is just a computer. That’s why the most important IT rule also applies to mobile phones: restarting often helps. The restart puts many functions of the mobile phone into their basic state and can therefore also eliminate reception problems. He is, so to speak, the big brother of the flight mode.

How do I restart my smartphone?

At Android phones press and hold the power button until a small menu appears on the display. This is where you will often find the phone restart feature. If it doesn’t appear there, simply press and hold the power button until the phone turns off. You can then turn it on again by long pressing the same button.

Restarting the works in a similar way iPhones. For older models with a home button, hold the button on the right or top edge of the iPhone to turn it off and on again. Starting with the iPhone X, the Apple cell phone no longer has a home button and the side button has additional functions. Here you press and hold the side button together with one of the volume buttons. To turn it on later, the side button is enough. Regardless of the iPhone model, a slider labeled “Power off” will appear on the display, which you must move to turn the device off.

Check SIM card

Sometimes it is also worth checking the SIM card. It may be damaged, for example because it was improperly cropped to a smaller size. However, dust or moisture may have gotten into the card slot and settled on the contacts. When you use the eSIM function, which is now available on some smartphones, there is no card in your phone. Skip this step.

With iPhones and many Android cell phones, you need the tool that came with the smartphone to slide the SIM card out of the device. A straightened paper clip, which you push into the small opening on one of the sides of the cell phone, is often sufficient. Smartphones where you have to lift off the entire back shell to get to the SIM card have become rare.

If necessary, you can also factory reset the network settings of your iPhone or iPad. To do this on iOS 16, tap on “Transfer/Reset iPhone” under “General” in the settings, then on “Reset” and then on “Network Settings”. However, because the WLAN passwords and VPN settings will also be lost in the process, this step should be the last resort.
