How to easily print from your phone

You can print from your phone wirelessly even via a USB cable (but this is a more complicated variant, which can be used only with printers that do not have Bluetooth or WiFi connection – and such are the absolute minimum today).

An easier option for wireless printing is to use a WiFi connection. First you need to turn on the WiFi network on the printer, then connect to the device with your phone.

A special application is needed for the printing itself: either you use native programs – Google Cloud Print for Android or AirPrint for printing from an iPhone. You can also download universal applications, see a list of the best applications for printing from iPhone and judge for yourself.

Other options are mobile applications directly from printer manufacturers. Their advantage is that they have the necessary drivers built in for communication with the models of the given manufacturer; in addition, these drivers are updated regularly. On the other hand, they cannot be used for printing from other devices. What applications are involved?

  • Canon: Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY,
  • HP: HP Smart,
  • Epson: Epson iPrint,
  • Oki: Mobile Print,
  • Xerox: Xerox Workplace,
  • Samsung: HP Samsung Mobile Print,
  • Lexmark: Lexmark Mobile Print.

Set the print job as needed (number of copies, print quality, etc.) and specify the print. You can print both documents from your phone’s storage and files from the cloud.

To print by cable, you need a USB cable that supports the OTG format. It is able to communicate with peripheral devices (eg with your mobile phone) and can process data received from a smartphone. You connect the OTG cable to the printer and connect it to the phone itself using the charging cable for your smartphone (at the end of the OTG cable is a plug for a standard USB connector).

At the same time, you need to install the driver for the given printer on your mobile phone (you can find it on the website of the manufacturer of the printing device). Once connected, printing is the same as for a wireless connection.

Pocket printers – printing photos on the go

In recent years, pocket-sized, rechargeable printers have become increasingly popular, allowing you to print photos or other images from your phone on the go. These devices use thermoslimation printing and print on classic photo paper. The resulting print is indistinguishable from the pictures from the photo kiosk.

Pocket printers can print several dozen photos on a single charge, and in addition to the classic photographic formats (9 × 13 cm and 10 × 15 cm), some of them can also print stickers, for example. Smartphones usually have a preset photo shoot in 4: 3 format, which is more suitable for social networks. So if you’re like that you will want to print the photo directly from your mobile phone, you will inevitably encounter a problem with unsatisfactory dimensions. The image then needs to be cropped, or will be supplemented by side white stripes in the photo.

The resolution of these portable printers is typically 300 DPI, which is perfectly sufficient for relatively high-quality photos. Many devices are controlled via a touch screen and, in addition to the phone, also allow printing from memory cards or external storage.

In addition to photo printers, there are also classic wireless printers. It is suitable, for example, for officials who need to print documents in places without access to the mains. It is almost always a laser printing device; unlike ink cartridges, they do not spill cartridges.
