Customers can pick strawberries for their own consumption at 50 places in Slovakia. Jana Holéciová, spokeswoman of the Slovak Chamber of Agriculture and Foodstuffs (SPPK), informed about it.
Especially near Bratislava
According to her, the first locations where people can come to pick strawberries are the areas in the southwest of Slovakia, especially near Bratislava. Gradually, as these fruits ripen in more northern areas, other regions in Slovakia will also be involved in self-harvesting. Growers, naturally, are waiting for enough sunny days. They also have to time the self-harvesting correctly so that there are enough ripe fruits for the first harvesters.
“For the last three years or so, we have been maintaining approximately 50 strawberry fields intended for self-picking. However, several growers have already learned from their mistakes and offer consumers first-class quality. However, the basis is a sufficient number of individuals, professional care of the stands, treatment and especially drip irrigation,” said Marián Varga, chairman of the Fruit Union of Slovakia.
According to Holéciová, the past weeks, which were rich in rainfall, significantly helped the ripening strawberries. Now it is important that there are as many warm and sunny days as possible, so that the strawberries gradually ripen throughout the territory of Slovakia. There shouldn’t be a problem with mold, because growers already know how to prepare well for such situations.
This year’s prices
She specified that this year’s strawberry peeler will cost approximately three euros per kilogram, prices vary depending on the intensity of frost protection, especially during cold spring days. Strawberries are also sensitive to spring frosts. This year, due to the strong frost during the nights of March and April, there will be fewer of them. The frost destroyed approximately 30% of strawberry production. Strawberry growers therefore call on people to be considerate of the plants during self-harvesting and to collect red fruits that have survived the frost in such a way that they are not destroyed while walking.
Holéciová added that self-harvesting in individual strawberry fields will last approximately two weeks. In the first days, fruit growers expect a great rush from the public, later interest decreases. The paradox, however, according to her, is that the best strawberries are the later ones, which are smaller, so it is worthwhile to come to self-harvest even a little later and reach for smaller pieces, which are excellent for jams, for example.
