How much does ECO mode help with consumption? Here’s what Toyota says

A study carried out by Toyota shows that we can reduce the level of noxes more easily than we might think. The solution would be to drive cars in Eco mode.

Pollution norms are becoming more and more stringent. We are not far from Euro 7, and manufacturers are trying to find the best solutions to make cars more efficient and to reduce the noise produced by internal combustion engines.

Toyota conducted a study based on this. The company gathered some people from within the organization and together with their families, they were trained on how to use the machines in the most efficient way. That meant they would use Eco mode.

For hybrid or plug-in hybrid cars, this will mean that they will run as much as possible on the electricity stored in the batteries. In the case of conventional cars, this ECO button will switch them in the most efficient way possible, for the best fuel economy and the lowest possible noxes.

How much does ECO mode help and what does Toyota’s data say?

Using this mode, those involved in the study traveled 400,000 miles (about 645,000 km). After performing these tests, they compared the emission values with those obtained in Normal, Standard or similar mode.

Following the tests, it is revealed that fuel worth 18,304 US dollars (about 17,000 euros) was saved. Fuel economy was 19.2 tonnes. As for the reduction of CO2 emissions, this can be compared to the benefits brought by 748 trees over 10 years. 45,235,623 grams of CO2 were exempted, i.e. over 45 tons.

The most important benefit was recorded on cars equipped with conventional engines. CO2 emissions fell by 26%, as did fuel consumption. In hybrids, the reduction was 4%, with the propulsion systems already operating in a fairly efficient manner that helps reduce pollution.
