Prison hotel above Turku
The prison area on Kakolanmäki in Turku has historically been a place where Finland’s most notorious criminals have been imprisoned. In 2020, the story of the area changed significantly, as now you can enjoy the setting of a high-quality hotel in Kakolanmäki, to which the gloomy history of the area adds a teasing addition.
The dignified-looking prison building today welcomes anyone, offering amenities that would make you want to enjoy even a longer stay.
Hotel Kakola offers a total of 148 rooms, all of which are individually decorated. The range of rooms includes suites and family rooms. There are a total of six room categories, ranging in size from 12 to 54 square meters. The hotel has two accessible rooms, both of which are standard rooms.
As a specialty, Hotel Kakola can also accommodate in a rather barren cell, to which a few amenities have been added for hotel guests. These include a mirror, a rug, and curtains, but the cellular atmosphere is by no means unavoidable, and it is not intended. The harsh conditions are reminded by the fact that, for example, the toilet is located in the same open space as the metal floor mite.
Where in the actual hotel rooms the setting is like in any high-class hotel, the prison atmosphere is strongly present in the hotel corridors. The small doors of the former cells have been left visible, although numerous cells have been connected to one hotel room. The thick walls of the rooms and the steep staircases leading from one floor to the other are also reminiscent of the building’s history.
The fascinating stories of the building and, in some places, the gruesome fates add to the hotel visit, but there is hardly any trace of them in the rooms themselves. Stories can be left outside the hotel room if you wish.
