Hong Kong: Haro on children’s books, accused of inciting sedition

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Hong Kong police on Thursday arrested five people on charges of “sedition”, accusing them of publishing children’s books whose heroes, wolves and sheep, would incite young people to hate authorities.

The move comes on top of other arrests of suspected Hong Kong government critics since Beijing imposed a national security law in June 2020, ending pro-democracy protests.

Police said one of the targeted books, “The Defenders of the Sheep Village”, was linked to the protests. It features sheep defending themselves with wolf horns trying to invade their village to devour them.

The people arrested Thursday, two men and three women aged 25 to 28 whose identity has not been disclosed, are members of a union of speech therapists which publishes books for children.

Chief Commissioner Steve Li told the media that the books are of concern to the police because they “turn (children’s) heads and develop a moral standard that goes against society.”

Another of these books tells the story of 12 sheep kidnapped by wolves and the third that of wolves sneaking into a village of sheep. According to Steve Li, these stories incite sedition.

The head of “sedition” is punishable by a maximum sentence of two years in prison, according to the police. The Hong Kong General Union of Speech-Language Pathologists could not be reached to comment on the arrests.
