Japan’s Honda is the first carmaker in the world to be licensed to sell third-level autonomous cars, the French news agency AFP reported.
Such vehicles, which will currently be able to be sold only in Japan, are capable of controlling traffic with a high degree of autonomy and participating in everyday traffic.
Vehicle autonomy can have five levels, the fifth is a fully autonomous vehicle which in no case needs the help of a driver. The third-level vehicles, which Honda should export to Japanese roads by the end of March next year, will be able, for example, to move on a highway with heavy traffic.
The first model equipped with such an automatic driving system will be the Honda Legend sedan. Led by him, Honda could become the world’s first carmaker to mass-produce third-level autonomous vehicles.
Some other brands are making rapid progress in the development of autonomous vehicles, but the problem is mainly in legal restrictions. Currently, only a few countries allow the sale and driving of such vehicles.
According to many automotive journalists, the transition to autonomous third-level vehicles is a key breakthrough that will greatly accelerate further development. Ellon Musk, the first man of the American manufacturer of electric cars Tesla, who is also in a hurry to develop autonomous cars, even announced that the fifth level of autonomy on the market will be “very soon”.
In such a car, for example, the driver could sleep or watch a movie while the car was moving and I reacted completely to traffic situations.
