Honda is hopelessly behind and this electric SUV should turn the tide

The electric SUV models are really popping up like mushrooms, but none of the electric SUVs bear the name of the next car brand: Honda. But this will soon change, with the Honda e:Ny1. Until then, you can practice on how to pronounce the model name…

Compact electric SUV

Honda’s new electric SUV is called Honda e:Ny1. Are we just a bit used to how you pronounce Toyota bZ4X, you get this. The model name e:Ny1 suggests what we are dealing with here with a concept car, but nothing could be further from the truth: the Honda e:Ny1 shown here is ready-made and will be on the market in 2023. The Honda e:Ny1 is a compact B-segment electric SUV. Think for example of a Peugeot e-2008, Opel Mokka-e and Jeep Avenger.

New platform

Although the Honda e:Ny1 looks suspiciously like the Honda HR-V, it is on a new platform from Honda with the e:N Architecture F – which partly explains the model name. With the number 1, Honda indicates that the Honda e:Ny1 is the first Honda model on the new platform. So there will also be an e:Ny2, we think. What the letter y stands for is a mystery to us.

Honda e:Ny1 range

The electric motor of the Honda e:Ny1 is good for an output of 204 hp and a torque of 310 Nm. If you drive away with a full battery (lithium-ion, 68.8 kWh, net: 62 kWh), Honda says that you have to go to the charging station after 412 kilometers (WLTP). That is a lot further than the range of the Honda e, namely 222 kilometers.

If you connect the Honda e:Ny1 to the fast charger, you’ll be up and running again in 45 minutes (10-80 percent). Fast charging is possible up to 78 kW and that is not very fast. Competitor Hyundai Kona taps 100 kW.

Exceptionally comfortable, says Honda

Honda promises that the Honda e:Ny1 will be a lot of fun to drive, due in part to the car’s low center of gravity and the high torsional rigidity of the chassis and body. At the same time, Honda says the e:Ny1 is exceptionally comfortable, and the interior is spacious. Here we see a 15.1-inch multimedia display standing upright. Fortunately, at the bottom of the screen we see shortcuts for operating the air conditioning and seat heating.

The new Honda e:Ny1 will be available in 2023; the prices will be announced by Honda.
