You have to walk the entire road with curves and against curves that climbs the hill, up to the top until you meet the building with four recently built units, which stands out on the highest point of the residential area of Conegliano, a territory marked by the vines of the grapes that will become prosecco, recently nominated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A comforting emptiness is what visualized the architect Massimo De Conti from the first moment he visited the shell of the unfinished apartment: “I immediately thought I had to open the rooms, leaving them as free as possible towards the outside view” which, beyond the castle on the left, opens as far as the eye can see towards the plain.
Based in London for years but originally from the same area, De Conti designed the home for a family of forty-year-old professionals and their child, who love animals, including the dachshund and, last addition, the turtle that has occupied one of the terraces. . “The only essential request was that of an aquarium in the main bathroom”, remembers the architect. For the rest, white paper in the design of 190 sqm with three bedrooms and three bathrooms that develop around a large open plan living area.
The idea of marine fauna has been revived in a poetic key with an episode that is only apparently casual: the step that connects the entrance and the living area, made with a block of Lumachella stone which forever guards a school of fossil fish: «I like the idea that people don’t immediately realize that they are walking on something that happened 50 million years ago, ”says the architect. The sinuous Wiggle Side Chair in cardboard by Frank Gehry for Vitra was positioned in the entrance next to the curved wall, unexpectedly used not as a seat but as a support for mail and keys.
And with the same free spirit that classic pieces by the masters such as the chairs by Le Corbusier and Gio Ponti are combined with other contemporaries by Patricia Urquiola, Piero Lissoni, Neri & Hu or Bouroullec in spaces that are empty enough not to be aseptic, which have as their constant base the stained oak floor laid in an Italian herringbone pattern. «I wanted to make something young, graphic and, as always, I left the scene a moment before filling it too much – says the architect – for the house to have a life of its own, and for the owners to complete it with additions over time ».
In the interior color contributes to the subtle atmosphere, protagonist without rigid rules except that of harmony. THEnvades and defines spaces enhancing the quality of light, both natural and artificial, to maximize comfort in individual rooms during all times of the day. La three-color striped boiserie at the entrance incorporates the bathroom and the courtesy wardrobe and returns as an architectural element in the corridor that gives access to the bedrooms, hiding wardrobes and storage areas; the white and green distinguishes the bathrooms in the three-dimensional ceramic coverings by Bouroullec while the blue and gray in the child’s room they highlight the pop accents of lamps and bedside tables. Finally, there is also an extra room: the covered terrace of 60 square meters that allows relaxation and lunches in almost all seasons or to welcome numerous friends at aperitif time, which in those parts will inevitably be a spritz or an iced prosecco.
