“Hole to hole, and when it rains it’s impossible to walk”: The suffering of the citizens of a part of Zaječar – Society

As soon as it rains a little harder in Zaječar, the residents of the 23rd Division Street cannot move normally. The problem is that, as the people of Zaječar claim, that street has not been reconstructed, only “holes have been patched”, and the storm sewer does not work at all.

“Since asphalting, we’ve only been looking at pothole patching for years. Those patches stay for a while and then open up and get even bigger. When it rains, they fill up, causing cars to be damaged because drivers cannot assess the extent of damage to the pavement. In the upper part of the street, they replaced the pipes and it’s been like that for years,” Petra Videnović, a resident of this street, explains the problem.

According to her, due to problems with sewerage and stormwater drainage, after heavy rain, his basement floods.

“At the end of the street there are two drains that are often clogged, and the others cannot receive such a quantity of water. Then it happens that water appears in my basement. I have complained several times, and they say that the problem is with my sewage system, which is not true,” Petra points out.

She says that the clogging of drains occurs because of unscrupulous citizens who throw away whatever they can, but also because the streets in Zaječar are rarely cleaned.

As for the upper part of the street where the water pipes were replaced, the interviewee of Danas says that the street will not be reconstructed until the entire length is replaced.

“So in the upper part of the street, the pipes were replaced, but nothing else was done. They haven’t even started in our area, so who knows when the street will be fixed, and until then, happy driving to all drivers. It’s hard for us when it rains, since instead of the street, we often have a lake,” she says.

Slavka Božinović lives in an alley that leads to the 23rd division street and, she tells Danas, that the problem has been going on for many years and that there is no solution in sight.

“All the surrounding streets look similar, but still the worst condition is on the 23rd Division street. It’s a shame that a street looks like this. Patch to patch, hole to hole, and when it rains, it’s impossible to walk without water,” she says.

“We don’t know anything. The only thing we see is that water collects in the lower part of the street after a heavy downpour, and that such a condition makes it difficult for us, as well as drivers, to move. There are no such problems in the upper part, since the street is falling, but the street there has not been reconstructed for years after they replaced the old pipes,” Božinović points out.

She adds that the last time the street was asphalted was in 1973, and since then it has only been patched.

In order to check whether the plan is to fix the street of the 23rd division, Danas sent questions to the mayor of Zaječar, Boško Ničić, but by the time this text was published, we had not received the answers.
