Prague – With the aim of improving the results compared to last season, Sparta hockey players will enter the new extraleague year. In April, Prague lost to Třinec in the playoff final, this time they would like to end the season with a victory and win the championship title.
“We will not renounce the role that is historically given to Sparta. In recent years, we have always come a little higher. Last year, we only finished in the finals, where we sold out the O2 arena in all matches. We want to be one of the favorites for the title and keep improving.” said general manager Barbora Snopková Haberová on the club’s website. Sparta took third place in the 2020/21 season, second in the 2021/22 season.
In the summer, the team from Prague significantly changed. Goalkeepers Matěj Machovský and Július Hudáček, defenders Tomáš Pavelka, Tomáš Dvořák, Maxim Matuškin and forwards Filip Chlapík, Tomáš Šmerha, Jakub Strnad, Zdeněk Doležal and Gennadij Stoljarov left. In their place came Jakub Kovář, Josef Kořenář, Jakub Krejčík, Michael Krutil, Dominik Simon, Gustaf Thorell and Ostap Safin. Sparta also has new coaches, Josef Jandač and Miloslav Hořava were replaced by Pavel Patera, with whom Patrik Martinec leads the team.
“We have very strong competition in attack and in goal. We would like to bring in one more defender,” said sports director Petr Ton. The people of Prague expect a lot from Simon, who returned to his parent club from the NHL. “There are not many players like him in the extra league. Of course, we hope for productivity from him, but we know that he will contribute to the team in many areas of the game,” noted Ton. Sparta was able to engage Simon also because it acquired a new general partner, which became the betting office Fortuna.
In preparation, Sparta played nine matches, including the Champions League, and won four times. She scored three failures in LM in September. “The preparation served its purpose. Some players had to deal with illness or injury, which is the same for every team. In the last matches of the Champions League, the lineup for the extra league, which is of course the most important for us of all competitions,” said Patera.
According to the new coaches, the Praguers want to present “honest” hockey in the extra league. “In which the fans will know that every player gave their best on the ice. I believe that if we succeed, we have enough quality to win. But we have to start from the maximum approach of each individual,” said Martinec. “If we play fair in all zones, the quality will show. If we are not fair, the games will be like a swing, which of course we don’t want,” added Patera.
